For those seeking a short yet rewarding hike in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, the Ngezi Crater Lake hike is an excellent option. This easy to moderate trek leads to a picturesque volcanic lake at the base of Mount Bisoke, offering stunning forest views, diverse wildlife, and a chance to experience the unique ecosystem of the Virunga Mountains.

Unlike the more strenuous Bisoke summit trek, the Ngezi Crater Lake hike is less demanding, making it ideal for travelers looking for a relaxing adventure in nature. The 4-hour round-trip journey meanders through lush rainforest, where visitors may spot golden monkeys, various bird species, antelopes, and even the occasional chameleon. Those especially lucky might even glimpse a mountain gorilla family or encounter buffalo and elephants, though these sightings are rare.

The Trail & What to Expect

The hike begins in the morning with a briefing at Volcanoes National Park Headquarters, followed by a short drive to the trailhead. A park ranger accompanies all hikers, and porters are available to assist with carrying gear or offering support on the steeper sections. Armed soldiers also escort groups as a precaution against encounters with large wildlife.

The trail itself is relatively easy, but depending on the season, it can be muddy and slippery, especially during the rainy months (March – May & October – November). Along the way, hikers will pass through dense jungle vegetation, where thick trousers, gloves, and sturdy hiking boots are recommended to protect against stinging nettles and uneven terrain.

Upon reaching Ngezi Crater Lake, hikers are rewarded with a serene volcanic depression surrounded by lush foliage. Depending on the time of year, the lake’s visibility varies—on clear days, it offers stunning reflections, while in wetter months, heavy mist and overgrown vegetation may obscure the view.

Despite this, the journey itself is a fantastic nature experience, offering expansive views of the Virunga Volcanoes, including Mount Bisoke, and panoramic sights stretching toward Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Best Time to Hike & Essential Gear

The best time to hike Ngezi Crater Lake is during the dry seasons (June – September & December – February) when trails are less muddy and visibility is higher.
