Karisoke Research Station and Dian Fossey Hike
Hike to Dian Fossey’s Karisoke Research Station: A Journey into Conservation History
Nestled between Mount Bisoke and Mount Karisimbi in Volcanoes National Park, the Dian Fossey Karisoke Research Station offers a unique and deeply moving hiking experience. This trek is not just about breathtaking landscapes; it is a pilgrimage to the legacy of one of the world’s most renowned primatologists, Dian Fossey, whose groundbreaking work with mountain gorillas forever changed the course of wildlife conservation.
Why Visit the Karisoke Research Station?
Dian Fossey, one of the greatest conservationists of the 20th century, established Karisoke Research Camp in 1967, dedicating her life to studying and protecting the endangered mountain gorillas of the Virunga Mountains. Her pioneering research led to the habituation of gorilla groups, making today’s gorilla trekking experiences possible. Tragically, she was murdered in 1985, but her legacy lives on, and she is buried beside her beloved gorillas at the site.
Visiting Dian Fossey’s tomb and the gorilla cemetery is a profound and emotional experience, offering insight into the struggles and triumphs of gorilla conservation. Though the original Karisoke Research Camp is no longer active, the site remains a symbol of her unwavering dedication to protecting these magnificent creatures.
