Mount Bisoke Hike
Hiking Mount Bisoke (3,711m) is a moderate to difficult trek through dense vegetation, past volcanic landscapes, and up steep inclines, all culminating in a crater lake at the summit. With a total hiking distance of 9.5 km (round trip) and an elevation gain of 1,025 meters, this 5 to 7-hour experience is both challenging and incredibly rewarding.
Mount Bisoke is part of the Virunga Mountain Range, an area known for its rich biodiversity and rare wildlife. As you ascend, you may spot golden monkeys, forest buffalo, and if you’re lucky, even mountain gorillas. While gorilla sightings aren’t guaranteed, the trek offers plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the breathtaking rainforest scenery and take in occasional sweeping views of the surrounding volcanoes—weather permitting.
What to Expect on the Hike
The hike begins at the Volcanoes National Park Headquarters with a morning briefing led by experienced park rangers. After securing your permit, you’ll embark on a 40-minute drive to the trailhead, where you can hire porters to assist with carrying gear and navigating tricky terrain.
From the trailhead, the ascent starts gradually before transitioning into steep uphill sections. The terrain can be muddy and slippery, especially in the rainy season, so sturdy waterproof hiking boots are a must. Despite the physical challenge, the hike is well-paced, with opportunities to rest and admire the unique alpine flora along the way.
As you approach the summit, the thinning air and cooler temperatures add to the challenge, but the reward is well worth it—a breathtaking crater lake at the top of Mount Bisoke, one of the most stunning natural features in the Virunga Range. If the weather is clear, you’ll also enjoy panoramic views of Mount Karisimbi, Mount Mikeno, and the surrounding valleys.
The descent back to the park headquarters takes around 2–3 hours, with the return journey offering a chance to appreciate the diverse landscapes and spot any wildlife missed on the way up.
Booking
Advance booking is required to hike Mount Bisoke, as permits must be obtained from Volcanoes National Park Headquarters. While last-minute bookings may be available, securing your spot ahead of time is recommended, especially during peak travel seasons.
