Mount Muhabura or Muhavura, meaning “The Guide” in Kinyarwanda, is the third-highest peak in the Virunga Mountain Range, standing 4,127 meters tall on the border of Rwanda and Uganda. Its steep slopes and rugged terrain make it one of the most challenging hikes in Volcanoes National Park, but those who reach the summit are rewarded with some of the best panoramic views of the Virunga Range. 

Although not as famous as the gorilla trekking experiences in the park, hiking Muhabura great experience for visitors. The trail is demanding but incredibly rewarding, offering stunning views of Rwanda’s rolling hills, Uganda’s Lake Mutanda, and the Virunga Volcanoes, as well as the chance to see golden monkeys, buffalo, and rare birds along the way.

The Trail & What to Expect

The hike starts early, with a briefing at 7:00 AM at either Kinigi . A steep and relentless ascent awaits, climbing over 1,700 meters in elevation through multiple vegetation zones:

It starts in lush grasslands and farmland, where locals cultivate crops on the lower slopes. It continues through thick bamboo forests, home to golden monkeys and rare bird species. You pass throguh afro-montane vegetation and then finally through the alpine zone with alpine plants as you climb higher

Best Time to Hike & Essential Gear

The dry seasons (June – September & December – February) offer the best conditions for hiking, as the trail can become muddy and slippery during the rainy months.

Permits are required and can be arranged through Volcanoes National Park. A park guide is mandatory, and porters can be hired for additional support.
